We got better views of both the male and female quetzal today. We went out without a guide today but went to the same tree we saw them in yesterday. We were the only ones there when Mike saw one fly in and then Chris found them both. The light wasn’t great. They crossed the road and were a bit more out in the open. Then, a tour bus drove by, saw us photographing, stopped and motioned to Chris to ask if quetzals were nearby. She nodded yes, and 20 people and three guides got out. Soon, the quetzals flew down the road a bit and fortunately one of the guides found them and motioned to us and the group to a better spot.
Mike took about a hundred photos of the male and only a few of the female,
In general, female birds are less colorful and flamboyant than the males, unlike in humans. How many times have you seen photos of an award show with many of Jennifer Garner and few of Ben Affleck? Anyway, here’s the female and then the male.
The female doesn’t have the long tail and the fancy “hairdo.”
Now here’s the male.
From the Ben Affleck reference you can tell we don’t keep up with entertainment news, and besides Mike prefers Casey Affleck movies.
